Lots of people care about cats. Louise Sherwood a local business woman cares for cats and also the people who take care of cats that are homeless. Louise has spent many years developing education programs to alleviate suffering for both cats and people while many ARC (Animal Rescue Cooperative) members have spent years giving hands on care to homeless cats.
“Clearly cats suffer when they are lost, abandoned and unwanted and so do the people that work for local government, charities and volunteers that do their best to taking care of thousands of lost and abandoned cats each year.
The homeless cat overpopulation problem has been going on for years, with millions of cats being killed each year throughout North America- this has caused a lot of stress for people who work to care for cats- people who never intend for healthy cats to be destroyed.
“Last week the OSPCA made the announcement that it was their intention to destroy 350 pets (more than 50% cats) clearly the problem is that there are too many cats and not enough caring responsible homes otherwise these pets would not be in a shelter. The people that work to help cats need help and hope, and we hope to give a lot of both with easy to implement public education programs that will inspire people to keep cats safe at home and care for cats responsibly.” Says Louise.
Louise in partnership with Jennifer Lister and the group ARC (Animal Rescue Cooperative) are launching an
education campaign in Hamilton and Burlington to help more than 15 rescue organizations that are part of ARC (Animal Rescue Co-operative) and also to support the City of Hamilton/Burlington Animal Services and HBSPCA in promoting fixing and basics of responsible care for cats. The education programs focus on three key ways that people can take action to prevent cat overpopulation and the killing of healthy, homeless cats.
“Last year in Hamilton approximately 5,000 homeless cats were taken care by City Animal Control. About 2,000 of these cats were placed. That’s the good news. The sad news is approximately 3,000 cats were destroyed. Everyone that is part of ARC is dedicated to education. We are pleased to have the support of Louise Sherwood, the City of Hamilton Animal Services, HBSPCA and Dr. Liz O’Brien- working together for the common purpose of preventing stress and suffering for cats and the people that care for them. The City Animal Services, the HBSCA and 15 rescue groups, most which are part of ARC are devoted to doing the best we can together to promote responsible care for cats. Public education is essential.” Say Jennifer Lister.
At the press conference on May 26th at 3:00 pm at LaSalle Pavilion Louise Sherwood and ARC, have invited animal care and control representatives including The City of Burlington and Hamilton animal services, Veterinarian and leading cat specialist Dr. Liz O’Brien, and the CEO of the HBSPCA-Keith Scott and Jolene Reagen director of Burlington Humane. It is my sincere hope this event is a positive catalyst bringing animal welfare representatives together for the common goal. Our greatest hope is that each organization will make a commitment at the conference that they will make a significant investment of time and resources into a successful public education that prevents homeless, healthy cats from suffering and being destroyed as a result of overpopulation. The first public education program will be launched on May 26th at this event.
