The Dog Legislation Council of Canada is delighted to host Cover Y’All’s Canadian premiere of Beyond the Myth on Saturday Nov. 5th at 7:00 pm and Sunday Nov. 6th at 4:00 pm at the Fox Theater in Toronto’s Beach district.
Beyond the Myth is a documentary about dogs commonly referred to as “pit bulls” and those who love and defend them. It explores the factors that feed the public’s fear of “pit bulls,” shows eye-opening research regarding media influence over public opinion and examines the conflict existing between advocates and opponents of breed discriminatory laws. Featured are three cities that ban pit bull-type dogs: Denver, Miami, andCincinnati—along with San Francisco, which requires the animals to be spayed and neutered.
In August of 2005 a breed ban (more correctly a ban on a shape or type of dog) was enacted in the province of Ontario. This was the first provincial or state-wide ban in North America. It is an amendment to an existing law, the Dog Owner’s Liability Act which has been in place since the late 1800’s but was rarely used. There is a need for dangerous dog legislation targeting irresponsible owners and we support such legislation; however, breed bans are irrational and unjust as well as futile.
We hope that you will join us and take this opportunity to expand your awareness on Breed Specific Legislation and the effects of the negative stereotypes that have been placed on dog owners that own so-called “pit bull” type dogs. We also hope you will tell your members and supporters about this event.
Please note: The filmmaker, Libby R. Sherrill, will be in attendance to speak with audience members about Beyond the Myth.
Sincerely,
Lori Gray
