Bette’s new owner had an unfortunately accident that left him unable to care for Bette and sadly she is now looking to find her forever home. She is a very good dog. Very sweet and affectionate with everyone. We believe her to be approximately a year old and she is the best behaved/untrained dog. She is just a naturally good girl that wants to please. She is just over 40 lbs and would be an ideal family pet or single’s companion.

Here is what her foster family had to say about Bette:

This dog is VERY well behaved. She has no training, however is a quick study. I think the most endearing quality about her is her willingness to go to her crate – When she’s bored, she just goes inside and curls up and sleeps! She also likes to carry around toys for long periods of time, but is fine with you taking them away from her – Very passive, very cute!
Bette is a very gentle dog. She even had a run in with an aggressive small dog – She just backed off and wanted nothing to do with the dog. She handled it excellently. She’s a complete suck. I feel she has some Sheppard in her, as the hair on her back goes up for the oddest reasons, if you pet her side, if she smells you cooking, a cold breeze, if she hears something interesting – I’ve had enough time with her to realize it’s just an odd quirk, similar to a cat arching its back when its being pet. She loves attention, but she also loves smelling around! She got many comments on how well she behaved with all the other dogs at the dog park, as well as her beautiful black coat. She has been perfect with any other dogs we’ve met! She loves the dog park and ran to her hearts content. She’s social, and seems to know when to “back off” if a playmate has had too much attention.

We are using a crate at sleep time, and she gets tired and goes in it herself. She was clearly crate trained and sees it as her “home” so we will continue using it as she finds it very comfortable. Bette has no anxiety whatsoever – she hasn’t made a peep. I’ve gone grocery shopping, as well as left for dinner for 2 hours with no issues in her crate. My apartment is full of little ole ladies and they’re very quick to tell me if anything in my apartment is making noise for more than a few minutes. She didn’t like her bath. She loves playing with the towel afterwards though! She is very good with busy traffic. Megan and I have been calling her the “chill” dog.

She loves going for walks! She sniffs everything and LOVES walking. She has learned quickly to “heel” and rarely pulls. She is a quick study! She also loves running free off the leash – She can run!!! She is an athletic dog, who will get restless without a good bout of daily exercise. Inside, she’s a “floor” potato (we don’t let her on the couch, and she follows that rule!) She is Very Quiet! She gives you a bit of warning before she’s about to bark, so you can usually shush her before she does.

Bette doesn’t appear to have any formal training however she does have good common sense. For example, if she jumps up, and you say “no”… she stops. I’ve got her leash trained already, so she’s a quick study. We’re working on “sit” and she is at about 25% of that. She’s not food motivated so it’ll take consistency to train her. I’ve been taking her everywhere with me, the only thing is she initially doesn’t want to get into the car, so I have to pick her up and put her in there.

Bette is a sweetheart. Everyone who’s met her has fallen in love. She’s got the excitability and cuteness of a puppy, but the calm, affectionate side of a dog many years older. She reflects your mood – if your feeling lazy – so is she! Want to go out for some hiking – she’ll be your hiking partner! She’ll bond quickly with anyone and make a perfect pet! On a side note – It’s REALLY hard to photograph a black dog – the pictures don’t give her beauty justice!

If you would like to make Bette part of your family, please visit our website at http://uglymutts.com and submit an application for consideration.
