All About Us

Thanks for your interest in Ugly Mutts Dog Rescue!!

Ugly Mutts is an all breed Ontario dog rescue and companion animal rehoming service that is comprised of dedicated and experienced dog rescuers along with a host of volunteer foster families, funded solely by your donations.

12Working together with local shelters, other rescues, and caring pet owners we are able to rescue, rehabilitate, train and provide quality foster care to homeless and owner surrendered pets until they can be adopted into suitable, loving new homes with committed adopters. Ugly Mutts volunteers have been committed to promoting responsible dog ownership for over 30 years and in 2009 alone they successfully rehomed over 250 pets that might have met with an otherwise untimely fate.

dog-rehomingThe SPCA was originally created to get rid of homeless animals through euthanasia. Although much has changed over the years due to the dedication of caring animal lovers, the SPCA continues to euthanize millions of animals each year. Even if your pet is lucky enough to get adopted they are often traumatized severely from being kept in an institutionalized environment. Recognizing the need for a more humane, compassionate and understanding approach to dealing with homeless pets, several long term experienced dog rescuers came together to form what is now known as Ugly Mutts Dog Rescue.

Homeless dogs that are lucky enough to be accepted by Ugly Mutts are kept in a loving home environment where they are treated like our own pets. Dogs never “run out of time” and continue to be well cared for until they find their perfect new home. Once adopted each pet’s story is shared with everyone through our “Happy Tails” pages which show the culmination of our volunteer’s efforts, the thankfulness of previous dog owners, and the happy faces of the families who have adopted their “perfect pet.”

Naming our rescue “Ugly Mutts” is our tongue-in-cheek way of paying homage to all the not-so-purebred, slightly over-weight, under-bitten, wonky eared, dewclaw-missing dogs of the world because we believe that “Every good dog deserves a safe and happy future.”

One of our experienced volunteers tells her story:

My affinity and love for animals just naturally grew into the role of rescuer at a very early age.  As a child my best friends included a crow name “Charlie”, a garter snake named “Sassy”, a one footed sparrow affectionately called “Peg Leg Pete” and a little dog that followed me home one day named “Tammy”.

At the age of 11 I began trapping feral kittens. I would use my lunch money to buy cat food used to entice the kittens from under the pile of tree trunks at a local “woods”.  I would then cart them around in a box on my wagon, going from door to door asking people to adopt them. Throughout my life it seemed that animals would appear from nowhere needing my help and I was always glad to reunite a dog with its owner or play nurse maid to a motherless furry friend.

As an adult I would frequent the local pounds visiting the homeless dogs and cats, bringing them treats, and just spending time talking to them and giving them some attention.  At one point I noticed that some of the dogs were actually wearing tags with their owners information and after informing the shelter staff it became evident they were just not interested in following up.   So I took it upon myself to start calling the owners. At about that same time I noticed that many lovely animals were being tagged for euthanasia or tagged to be sent to a research lab.  So I started adopting these animals and caring for them until I could find them suitable new homes.  It was during one of these pound excursions that I ran into other rescuers who had the same goal in mind. Over the next almost 30 years I have continued my rescue efforts working with many caring people.  Today I consider myself lucky to be involved with a wonderful group of people that together make up the Rescue known as Ugly Mutts.
